Volunteer's Guide

Volunteering at St. Lucy Center is rewarding, because it is for such a good cause. By providing loving care for babies, you are helping them begin their lives with a good start. The majority of volunteers begin their shift in the morning or early afternoon.

What a Volunteer does at St. Lucy Center

  1. When you arrive, whether in the morning or early afternoon, please check in with the office to let them know you have arrived and to see if there is any special job that is needed that day.
  2. Wash hands before beginning any work or interacting with the babies.
  3. Each day the babies are fed at 1 AM., 5 AM, 9 AM, 1 PM, 5 PM, and 9 PM. The nannies begin making bottles about one hour before each scheduled feeding. If you are available when the nannies are preparing bottles, it would be a great help to feed the older babies baby food or table food.
  4. Babies are given a bath every morning starting at 7 AM.
  5. Babies are taken to doctor's appointment around 10 AM or 1:30 PM for immunizations.
  6. Younger babies are fed White Snow, a quality Japanese-brand formula. Older infants have theirs mixed with rice, oats or cereal, served warm, not hot. Liquid viatamins are also mixed in formula for babies.
  7. Older babies get baby food starting around 6-7 months as a supplement to their regular feedings, and to get them try some new food.
  8. With number of babies, it is impossible to feed them a bowl of it one by one. Volunteers help feed older babies baby food and table food. Often, congee, rice, vegetables and meat are slow-cooked into a soft, melt in your mouth soup. Nannies often bring an extra lunch box for the older babies and toddlers.
  9. Volunteers sometimes bring egg custard, pudding, fresh fruit, dumplings and other easily chewable food for older babies and toddlers. Special treats for little ones include wax apple, mango and lychee.
